Journey to Adulthood
The Journey to Adulthood (J2A) is a complete youth ministry program of spiritual formation for teens. Through mentoring relationships with adults in the parish, the program includes Bible study, prayer, rites of passage, mission trips, pilgrimages, and both serious and playful activities to underscore its core messages. The central themes of Journey to Adulthood (J2A) are:
  • Manhood and womanhood are free gifts from God.
  • Adulthood must be earned.

Typically, there are three two-year segments of the program:

Rite-13: Usually for 7th & 8th graders with a focus on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential.
J2A: The middle portion of the program which engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood. At the end of this portion the youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage together.
YAC: A mentor-based program to help older teens discern and carry out a ministry with their church or in the wider community. Vocation and development of a personal credo are also emphasized.

Currently Holy Cross is offering the middle segment, J2A, and a new Rite-13 group has been  be formed. Groups meet in their own youth room every Sunday morning from 11:15 to 12:15 during the school year.
Past J2A groups have taken pilgrimages to Ireland and Spain. Pilgrimage 2010 visited England and Scotland.

Rite 13 schedules a busy year

The members of Rite 13 want to thank you the congregation for a great Heifer Market this year. We sent $1,360 to Heifer International from Holy Cross.

This year we are studied the Images of God and who I am. We did a lot of volunteering in the community and just got to know ourselves and one another.

Our schedule so far was:
  • Overnight at Jon and Robin Getz’s to make crosses from wood, play games and just have fun.
  • Work at St. Mark’s Sunday Breakfast on two Sunday mornings (Feb. 7 and April 25)
  • Volunteer at the Kent County Humane Society
  • Hold a Heifer Market
  • Make snack packs for the Kid’s Food Basket*
  • Crop Walk
  • The Rummage Sale in June with the J2A
This was a very full schedule since we only met every other week, but we will continue into next fall and winter.

  • J2A members: David Kremer, Sean and Chris Elsenbroek and Drew Tolley
  • Support staff: Jon Getz, Ross Mast, Liz Ripley and Sally VandeBrake

*If you know companies or stores who would donate items for the snack packs, please talk to one of the team members. We will post a list on the bulletin board. The Kid’s Food Basket helps approximately 1,700 kids each week.
